Millionaire Cocktail
1 Egg White (omitted)
1/4 teaspoon Grenadine
1/2 oz Triple Sec (Hiram Walker)
1 1/2 oz Whisky (Crown Royal)
Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.
Another good drink that we enjoyed on the patio. It was a flavorful drink that bears repeating.
The recipe was on page no. 122 of the "Official Bartender's Guide", 1985 edition.

Fox River Cocktail
Tonight we had a 'Fox River Cocktail', and a pretty good one. The recipe is on page 82 of the Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide from 1985. I open it randomly every night to find a new cocktail to try.
The recipe:
1 tablespoon Brown Créme de Cacao (LeRoux)
2 oz Whiskey (Jim Beam Bourbon)
4 dashes Bitters
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass. I garnished with (what else?), an orange slice.
The drink was good with the whiskey taste adequately subdued by the Créme de Cacao. It is one I'd try again.
Cheers!

Manhattan (Dry)
Another warm delightful day.
Our drink was a 'Manhattan (Dry)' from page 119 in the Bartender's Guide.
The recipe:
3/4 oz Dry Vermouth (Noilly Prat)
1 1/2 oz Blended Whiskey (I used Jim Beam instead)
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Serve with an olive.
The cocktail was good, the whiskey taste predominant. We were pleased with the drink. It's one to repeat.
Cheers.

Lawhill Cocktail
Thursday's drink was a 'Lawhill Cocktail' (from page 113 of the Bartender's Guide). The cocktail had more ingredients than most drinks but it worked out ... had a very nice taste with the Absinthe and Whiskey components lending identifiable flavors. it was a good drink.
The recipe:
3/4 oz Dry Vermouth (Noilly Prat)
1 1/2 oz Blended Whiskey (Jim Beam Bourbon instead)
1/4 teaspoon Absinthe Substitute (La Fee-real stuff)
1/4 teaspoon Maraschino (Luxardo)
1 dash Bitters (Angostura)
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

The drink today was a 'Temptation Cocktail' (on page 168 of the Bartender's Guide).
The recipe:
1 1/2 oz Blended Whiskey (Old Forester Bourbon-didn't have blended whiskey)
1/2 teaspoon Triple Sec (LeRoux)
1/2 teaspoon Absinthe (La Fee)
1/2 teaspoon Dubonnet
Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.
Add twists of lemon and orange peel.

Swiss Family Cocktail
My daughter (and family) were with us today and presented us with some new cocktail glasses, one of which is shown at the left. They are lovely and appreciated (I am pretty rough on cocktail glasses as it turns out!).
Today we had a 'Swiss Family Cocktail' (page 167 in our Bartender's Guide).
The recipe:
1/2 teaspoon Absinthe Substitute (I used Absinthe)
2 dashes Bitters
3/4 oz Dry Vermouth (Noilly Prat)
1 1/2 oz Whiskey (Old Forester)
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass. I garnished with an orange slice.
The drink was good; just a hint of the Absinthe taste came through. Although not in our "favorites" list (if we had one), it was quite drinkable and enjoyable.
Salud!

A stormy day and a very cold night...

Canadian Cherry
Tonight's choice was a 'Canadian Cherry' cocktail from page no. 55 of our Bartender's Guide. I chose this drink so we could use our new old-fashioned Mardi Gras glasses a friend gave us (Mardi Gras season is starting up here in Louisiana).
The drink was very good. Olga and I both enjoyed it and will have another at some point.
The recipe:
1 1/2 oz. Canadian Whiskey (Canadian Club)
1/2 oz. Cherry Brandy (LeRoux)
1 1/2 tsp Lemon Juice
1 1/2 tsp Orange Juice
Shake all ingredients and strain into old-fashioned glass over ice cubes. Moisten glass rim with cherry brandy.
I skipped the last instruction!
Cheers.

Oriental Cocktail
A tart cocktail. I used the amount of lime juice specified but should have used about half as much, at most. I must change my routine to one where I taste fruit additives like this to make sure I don't add too much.
This 'Oriental Cocktail' is found on page no. 132 in the Bartender's Guide. Despite being tart, the drink was pretty good. I would try it again with less lime. The whiskey taste came through, which I liked.
The recipe:
1 oz Whiskey (Old Forester Bourbon)
1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth (Dolin)
1/2 oz Triple Sec (LeRoux)
Juice of 1/2 lime
Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.
Cheers!

Black Hawk Cocktail
Christmas at the Cove - everything's brown and dreary!
But the drink is merry.
I chose a 'Black Hawk Cocktail' (on page 40 in the Bartender's Guide) for the day. I don't usually care for Sloe Gin, but it mellowed the whiskey in this drink beautifully. The drink was very tasty.
All in all a nice drink that I would reorder if I were paying for it.
The recipe:
1 1/4 oz Whiskey (Old Forester)
1 1/4 oz Sloe Gin (LeRoux)
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass. No garnish was specified but I served the drink with a cherry.
I also mixed a second drink tonight (I was thirsty after a physical therapy appointment). For that I selected a Southern Comfort Manhattan, again. But, this time I refined the recipe some and enjoyed it much more than reported previously.
The (new) recipe (not from the Bartender's Guide):
2 oz. Southern Comfort
1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth (Martini & Rossi - I ran out of Noilly Prat)
Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Serve with a cherry.
Maybe it was the change in Vermouth but the cocktail was better than the one prepared last week!
To your health!

Manhatten Cocktail
We had a good day. The temperature was above freezing, we had friends over for drinks and received gifts in the mail from friends in Georgia.
I picked another Whiskey-based drink for tonight.
On page 119 in the Bartender's Guide, I made a 'Manhattan Cocktail'.
3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth (Noilly Prat)
1 1/2 oz Whiskey (Old Forester)
Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Serve with a cherry. I also added a teaspoon of maraschino cherry juice for a little extra sweetness.
(My garnish was 2 cherries on a pick and an orange slice).
I also prefer it shaken rather than stirred. The cocktail was very good. Somehow, most seem to taste good these days!
Cheers!
